Project 27: Open Systems Interconnection: Soederkoeping 1983: =================== Einarsson reported from the TC2 discussion on OSI in Baden. The TC2 liaison to ISO/TC97/SC16 stressed the importance of input from several sources in order to obtain changes or additions to the OSI standard. The standard will influence our future work for a long time. The question of main importance to WG 2.5 is how to tell the receiver how floating point numbers are represented. At present real numbers are not included in the working documents of SC16. A resolution was passed by TC2 with some minor editorial changes. The intention is to send the first § to the WG chairmen from TC2, and the § to all WG members from the liaison officer (Steel): "At its meeting on May 30-31, 1983, TC-2 of IFIP has considered the issue of ISO/TC97/SC16-OSI vis-a-vis the involvement of TC-2 and its Working Groups. TC-2 considers the implications of an ISO standard on OSI very important. The substance of OSI appears to have strong scientific relations to the work of almost all WGs. TC-2 recognizes that some WGs pursue project oriented work, whilst other WGs, on the other hand, center their work around individual scientific exchanges. TC-2 recognizes that the OSI documents may not be of a form that directly appeal to a closer study by many WG members. Nevertheless TC-2 considers it important to ask its WGs and their members to communicate their views on the following questions : Should the WGs formally consider OSI? How can OSI further the interest of TC-2 and of WG members. TC-2 asks that these views be forwarded to both the chairman of TC-2 and to TC-2's representative to SC16." WG 2.5 passed the following resolution: "The group requests that the presentation level includes facilities for transferring real numbers since these are of great importance to scientific computing." Stanford 1988: ============== Document: IFIP/WG 2.5 (Stanford-8) 1508, 3 pages, B. Einarsson reported on the information he sent to TC2 in his report on real numbers in OSI (1508). Beijing 1989: ============= WG 2.5 members Einarsson and Vouk are continuing to monitor the X3T2 activities. Jerusalem 1990: =============== WG 2.5 members Einarsson and Vouk will continuing to monitor the X3T2 activities as part of the liaison activities of WG 2.5, however the project itself will be closed (Einarsson).
